I worked for 15 years in the over consumerist world of advertising and would hardly be described as a green hippy. However I am part of the new community of people who realise there is no alternative than to really, deeply change and that we may even find it a nice and fun process!
I am a firm believer urban gardens are great allies in the challenge ahead even if they have almost no green plants out there and their owners may have indulged in some rather un- eco friendly furniture/ designs.
They can play a role in many ways. They can help change our pace and expectations from city living. That is quite powerful in itself.
I was just watching 'The 11 th Hour' produced by Leonardo di Caprio . I thought it adds to the debate in more ways than one. Whilst 'The Inconvenient truth' by Al Gore is very fact based, Leo's film goes a little further by exploring the psychological dimensions involved. This is not a green blog so I will spare you the full story but I will relay 2 simple thoughts. One expert says the problem to lift our resistance to changing our ways is that we need to change the objects of our desires. Today we can identify zillions of brand names and only a couple of plants. Until we make this type of knowledge about the earth 'cool' we are up against the brick wall of consumers current value system. The film also promotes slowness.Taking time. Time we have at our disposal if we gave up frenetic shopping and over working to fund the frenetic shopping.
I believe a well planned outdoor space, using the great new designs can give you lots of options to do sport, indulge in gourmet life, laze about or enjoy nature even if only a minute space. No need to run out in a car to rush away from the city...
For those who are interested : I really find these 3 films a basic must for any family today.
